15mtrs of RG 213 would that be good enough for 70cm. Also any idea where I could also obtain a 12v coaxial relay suitable for 70cm as well.

Hi radiofab. You're going to loose approx 2dB in the cable, the spec gives a loss of 3.7dB per 100 feet at 300Mhz. Assuming worst case scenario what with connectors and a bit of SWR call it 3dB. So 20W at the back of the rig equates to 10W at the antenna. With an antenna of 9dB gain, easy to achieve on70 gives you an erp of 80W.
You wont get better figures with any coax until you start to use Andrews Heliax which costs a fortune. I use 213, its the most cost effective cable.

It depends on what you are doing on 70cm.
If it's SSB using a high gain yagi etc. and you are chasing DX then there is no point in throwing away power, and receive signal, so hardline, or Ecoflex 10, would be the choice.

For non critical use then RG213 would do.

You just need to make sure it is genuine, full spec, RG213 or UR67 as there has been a lot of sub-standard co-ax on the market since CB became popular.

The type of relay depends on how much power you are running.
Relay
Also available with N connectors and suitable for mid power levels.
This is obviously new but you should find something similar second hand or surplus.

Toyo Tsusho, Radiall and Dow Key are all good brands.

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony, Ecoflex is a new one to me. As I only do car based portable vhf/uhf nowadays, with feeder lengths of 5m max I've never bothered to seek out anything better. I'll be trying Ecoflex next season as it looks easier to handle than trad 213 or UR67 as well as a useful reduction in loss. 213 certainly was the best when I started.
Totally agree that you should go for the best low loss cable especially important with longer runs.

I use Ecoflex 15 straight from shack to mast head pre-amps (about 50ft) on 13/23cm and for the runs that need to be flexible up the versatower on 6/4/2M and 70cm.
The runs from the shack to the tower base are in 1/2" Cu2Y hardline.

For short runs when out portable I use Ecoflex 10 up to 70cm.

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony, I'll give Ecoflex 10 a try. I do 6m, 2m, and 70 cm with home made beams on a 3m mast, mounted on the Landrover towbar, beams rotatable with a small 6V rotator. Usually work from a local high spot, Holme Moss. We have worked, last on 70cm, 10/03/09 at 20:43, your rpt 5-8, mine 5-6! For the record, 20w to a 9 ele home made long yagi.
Catch you again sometime!
Regards, Bill, G6BCC
